WHY GO GREEN?

Why go green?

Research continues to support and discover the many benefits surrounding living a healthier & greener lifestyle, making the decision to 'go green' the way of the future.
This includes the positive personal health, wellbeing, environmental, and financial benefits.

In order to conserve and protect the environment, decisions made everyday by people across the world influence the quality of life and the environment. However responsibility falls heavily on decision makers such as the designers of cities and products humans choose to live, work in and use.

“Decision-making processes should effectively integrate both long and short term economic, environmental, social and equity considerations.” (Ecologically Sustainable Development Steering Committee, 1992)

The following five key sustainability principles outline ways you can make a positive difference and identify the need for environmental conservation.

• Design healthier human environments and use eco-friendly products

• Reduce energy consumption
• Enhance biodiversity
• Conserve water
• Minimise waste and pollution

TEN TIPS FOR GOING GREEN

1. FOOD: Choose to buy organic fruit and vegetables and swap meat dishes for vegetarian options at least twice a week. Skip dairy if you can for natural alternatives such as soy, coconut or almond milk. Read the labels on food before you buy to avoid eating artificial ingredients, fertiliser residue, hormones and additives, keep a 'healthy shelf' in your pantry

2. GREEN TRAVEL: Ride a bike, walk to work or use public transport

3. RECYCLE: Buy a separate bin for recycling bottles, cans and paper. If you have a garden use a compost bin to recycle kitchen waste and organic plant waste and use as compost

4. WATER: Conserve water by taking shorter showers. Invest in a water filter to avoid drinking fluoride and chlorine, but making sure we are drinking the essentials minerals and nutrients, drink plenty of water every day by keeping a 2 litre bottle nearby

5. ENERGY: Energy efficiency saves money and the environment! Use energy saving light bulbs, skip using the air-conditioning unit when possible and open all windows to let fresh air ventilate your home, turn power off at the wall when not in use, ditch the microwave

6. ECO: Opt for eco & animal friendly products such as home cleaning solutions, interior finishes such as carpets, rugs and household paint and even make-up

7. UP-CYCLE: Have fun with preloved furniture, home wares and fashion. Reuse  and up-cycle to put your own touch on vintage retro items

8. GREEN THUMB: Start a mini herb or vege garden, incorporate native plants to protect local birds and animals, keep fresh flowers or plants in your home to add colour and energy

9. LEARN: Keep learning about ways to live green and stay inspired to make a difference

10. LOVE: Love yourself, your mind, body and soul deserves to live a happy, healthy and fulfilling life, let your positivity inspire others. Try yoga or pilates to feel more centred and relaxed
